Born Ferdinand Pascual Aguilar on February 5, 1953, in Santo Tomas, Isabela, Freddie’s musical journey began early. By age 14, he was composing songs, and by 17, he had taught himself to play the guitar. His early influences included folk legends like Cat Stevens and James Taylor. Despite enrolling in Electrical Engineering at De Guzman Institute of Technology, his passion for music led him to leave college and pursue a career as a street musician, eventually performing in folk clubs and bars.

“Anak”: A Song That Touched the World

In 1978, Freddie composed “Anak,” a heartfelt song reflecting on his personal experiences and the universal theme of parental love and regret. The song became an international sensation, translated into 51 languages and selling over 30 million copies worldwide, making it the best-selling Philippine music record of all time.  “Anak” not only showcased Freddie’s musical talent but also his ability to connect deeply with listeners across cultures.

The Voice of the People

Freddie’s music was not just about melody; it was a powerful tool for social commentary. His rendition of “Bayan Ko” became an anthem during the 1986 People Power Revolution, symbolizing the nation’s struggle for democracy. Beyond this, songs like “Magdalena” and “Mindanao” highlighted issues such as poverty and social injustice, solidifying his role as a voice for the marginalized.
